Omaha Hi/Lo

Most poker players, at one point or another, want to learn how to play different types of poker including Texas Hold’em and Omaha, but one of the newer ones catching on is Omaha Hi/Lo. Those players who are new to the game should consider learning how to play on one of the popular online poker sites including Bet365 Poker or Bwin Poker. This is a version that is similar to regular Omaha but the pot is usually split between the player with the high hand (which is how Omaha is played) and the player with the low hand (based on 5 cards, which must be 8 or lower). If there is no low hand, then only the high hand will win. Any cards that are nine or higher will not count for the low hand, so a player will need something like 2,3,5,6 and 8 in order to qualify for the low hand.

When playing Omaha Hi/Lo, you will be dealt four cards (also referred to as hole cards) face down on the table and you will be the only one to look at them. Always avoid showing or sharing your cards with other players because it gives them the edge to know what you have and either bluff you off or know that they have the winning hand. The dealer will also place 5 community cards on the table in which everyone can see and use. Each player will be required to use at least two of their four hole cards along with three of the community cards to make the best possible 5 card hand.

Omaha Hi/Lo is divided up into four single rounds of betting and the betting will continue to move around the table clockwise. The person who is next to the dealer button will be the first person to bet and is also known as the small blind. The person sitting next to them is referred to as the bling blind and as the betting starts, the position will move to the left after each hand completes. A dealer button will be given to the player that was in the small blind position once the hand completes and also continues to move to the left with each new passing hand.

When playing Omaha Hi/Lo, you should consider playing on Full Tilt Poker or Poker Stars since both of them are two of the biggest online poker sites available. Both offer free signup bonuses for those who are depositing for the first time. You will also be able to earn points for each time you play on certain cash ring tables or tournaments which can later be redeemed either to enter new tournaments or exchanged for real cash. However, keep in mind that like on most poker sites you cannot play for real money if you are a US resident.  Unfortunately this is due to country regulations and cannot be changed by the actual poker rooms.

In Omaha Hi/Lo, as with any other poker game, you have what is referred to as a show down once the final card is dealt. This is the stage when all players will show their cards in order to determine who the winner of the hand is. Unlike Texas Hold’em where you only play for the highest hand, you will need to determine if there are two winners. The first winner will receive half of the pot for having the high hand and the second part of the pot will go to the player who has the lowest hand. In Omaha Hi/Lo, it’s possible for more than one player to either have the same high hand or same low hand in which they would split the pot equally. So for example if two people have the same high hand they would split 50% of the pots between them while the low hand would get 50% for just them if there are no other players involved. However, there may not be a low hand and if this is the case, then the high hand would get the entire pot. There will always be a winning high hand even if it’s just a high card but in order to

have a qualifying low hand, the player must use all five cards which must equal eight or below; so something like 2, 3,5,6,8 would qualify as the low hand.

When playing Omaha Hi/Lo for the first few times, it’s imperative that you pay close attention to what you have in your hand and on the board so you don’t throw away a winning hand. Many new players forget about the low hand and toss it without thinking or they try to use the ace as a low card but in this game it’s considered a high card. For those that are just learning the game you will benefit from playing on many of the free poker sites such as Party Poker, 888 Poker and William Hill Poker due to all of the useful information they can provide you about this game and many others.

Omaha Hi/Lo is rapidly becoming one of the most popular games in poker alongside Texas Hold’em and regular Omaha. For those players who are just learning the game they will greatly benefit from playing against other players online. This helps to build your skill level, confidence and online playing time. Even if you participate in live action on a daily basis, playing online is quite different and it may take a while to adjust to the differences. Regardless it’s very beneficial to practice the game as often as possible before ever depositing real money into your account so you know what you are doing.

Many online poker sites offer video tutorials on how to play Omaha Hi/Lo as well as the other popular poker games that players enjoy. You can enjoy practicing for free and once you feel as though you are ready to make a real money deposit, it can be done quick and easy through most of the online poker sites.
